Rev. Jeremy L. Spencer replied to C. Jeff Woods's discussion 'Question: Has the economy affected your ministry? How?'
One man in our congregation who recently lost his job has been mowing the lawn for our church; his donation in-kind is his way of helping us with our maintenance expenses. What he has right now is quite a bit of time to give. We appreciate his help.

Area Ministry in Tough Economic Times

I'm interested in how economic conditions have impacted Area Ministry within the American Baptist Churches U.S.A. Several regions are downsizing and Area Ministry positions either have been cut, or there are possible moves in this direction in some regions. There have been suggestions that the functions Area Ministers have had might become voluntary. I'm interested in how that might affect our churches. I'm opening this discussion because I've been asked to chair and to convene a task force in…See More

Leading in Tough Times

In the summer issue of Congregations from the Alban Institute, Susan Rauch has an article entitled, “Giving What We Have.” In particular, she lists four things that leaders can do to lead more effectively during these tough times…1. Facilitate human contact.2. Model and invite generous and sacrificial giving of time, talent, and resources.3. Take care of your own soul and health.4. Continue to lead in a faithful, grace-filled way.For more on this, see…See More

Poverty and the Baptist Legacy in the World

I [Larry Greenfield] am contributing this sermon by Ellis Orozco on behalf of Joe Kutter, who is on the road on his way to the Ministers Council Senate meeting at Green Lake. Here's what Joe wrote about the Orozco sermon:I [this is Joe writing] attended the "Midwestern Gathering" of the New Baptist Covenant in Oklahoma City. Ellis Orozco, a Texas pastor, was given the assignment to speak to the issue of poverty and he did. A manuscript is always a poor substitute for a well preached sermon, but…See More

Introduction

We know American Baptists, like so many persons living in this country and around the world are experiencing economic hardship in this economy.

We also believe that our American Baptist denomination – our churches and agencies, our regions and other organizations, and all of us in our life together in Christ – are called to help one another, as well as those outside our fellowship, in this time of need.

One avenue of help and hope is offered through this website as we invite you to share your ideas and questions with one another.

Click on the "forum" button either above or below to post your idea or question today, in one of the following areas...

* Congregational Responses
* Worship Resources
* Social Service Responses
* Saving Money/Generating Income Responses
* Advocacy Responses

A separate forum for posting discussion items and uploading resources is offered under each topic so that the uploaded resources are more easily locatable.
